EPS-HEP 2017 - Tour

The Islands of Venice

Sunday July 9th 2017

A fascinating day excursion to explore the most famous islands of the lagoon: Murano, Burano and Torcello. Murano, not far from Venice, is world famous for its glass blowing art. Visit one of the best glass furnace for an art blowing demonstration and, eventually, some shopping. Continue to the picturesque island of Burano, a fishermen island well known for the hand-made laces and colorful houses. Some time at leisure to stroll around the island and lunch in a typical seafood restaurant. After lunch proceed to Torcello, the first human settlement in the lagoon, established around the 5th century. Interesting to watch the canal banks that have been reconstructed as they used to be at the very beginning, with poles all around these small islands to keep the ground. The major monuments in Torcello are the little cozy byzantine church of Santa Fosca with its beautiful portico, and the bigger Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta with its famous mosaic that inspired Dante Alighieri for his Divine Comedy. Not to forget the large Baptistery (now visible only few ruins) positioned right in front of the Basilica.
